Hello!
Today, the students were introduced to their next writing assignment. They will each be producing a persuasive letter. It is a very structured piece of writing and today we looked at this structure and began brainstorming topic ideas. Parents can help in this process, if they wish, by doing some brainstorming of topic ideas together and perhaps assisting with some research to help find supporting details, facts, and examples.
Our next math unit is relatively short and will focus on geometric properties of 3D shapes. Students will need to know how to identify and classify 3D shapes. Eg. is this shape a pyramid or a prism? Which pyramid or prism is it? Or, describe how many faces, edges, and vertices a rectangular prism, etc. has.

Data Management Test - Wednesday, February 25
We will be having our test for data management on Wednesday. We have been working on and practicing material from this unit for quite some time now and students should already be well prepared. We will spend the next two days doing additional review. We have already done a number of smaller assessments for this unit.
The test will include:
Finding mean, median, mode and range
Drawing line and bar graphs, given a set of data
Finding information using graphs (being able to read line, bar, and circle graphs)
Finding bias in graphs (compare two graphs and be able to describe whether or not they show the same data and if one shows bias)

Proportional Reasoning - video
Proportional reasoning is an area that is receiving a lot of attention from the Ministry of Education. The following is a video produced by EQAO to help parents understand what is involved. It includes suggestions for parents to help their children develop and practice proportional reasoning.
